There is much more to a holiday in Agia Pelagia than simply spending the day on the beach. Our small seaside village is a wonderful base for discovering both the north coast of Crete and the island beyond — whether you are looking for a day on the water, an outdoor adventure, traditional Cretan villages, archaeology, local food or a memorable road trip.

You can make every day different. Swim in a quiet cove in the morning, visit an ancient Minoan palace in the afternoon and finish the day at a family taverna overlooking the sea.

Things to Do in Agia Pelagia

The sea is naturally at the centre of life in Agia Pelagia. The main bay is relatively sheltered, with clear waters that are ideal for swimming, snorkelling and water activities. Around the peninsula you will also find the smaller beaches and coves of Psaromoura, Mononaftis and Kladissos, while Lygaria Beach lies just along the coast to the east.

Try snorkelling or scuba diving and discover what lies beneath the surface, rent a SUP or kayak, enjoy one of the available water sports or simply take your mask and explore the rocky edges of the bay.

Boat trips are another wonderful way to experience the area. A few hours at sea gives you an entirely different view of the rugged Cretan coastline, with opportunities to swim in small bays that are difficult or impossible to reach by road.

For those who prefer to stay on land, the hills surrounding Agia Pelagia are ideal for walking, cycling and e-bike excursions. Small roads and tracks lead into a landscape of olive groves, rocky hills and traditional settlements, with beautiful viewpoints over the Cretan Sea.

Discover the Area Around Agia Pelagia

You don’t have to travel far to find another side of Crete.

Drive inland towards the traditional villages of Achlada, Rodia and Tylissos, stopping wherever something catches your attention — a small church, an old stone house, an olive grove or a village kafeneio.

To the west, Fodele makes an enjoyable short excursion. The green valley, orange groves and village atmosphere are quite different from the dry coastal landscape of summer.

To the east lies Heraklion, close enough for an easy morning or afternoon visit. Explore the historic centre, walk around the Venetian harbour, see the impressive Koules fortress, visit the Archaeological Museum or simply wander through the streets, markets, cafés and shops.

And only a little further inland is Knossos, the most famous Minoan archaeological site on Crete and one of the island’s essential cultural experiences. The ancient centre flourished for around two millennia and is closely connected with the legends of King Minos, the Labyrinth and the Minotaur.

Experience the Real Crete

Some of the most memorable experiences are not necessarily the famous attractions.

Visit a mountain village. Stop for coffee where the locals stop. Taste olive oil where it is produced. Try Cretan cheese, honey, herbs and local wine. Sit down for lunch in a small village taverna without being in a hurry.

Crete has a strong food culture, and discovering the island through its gastronomy can be an excursion in itself. Look for opportunities to visit wineries, olive mills and local producers, or join a cooking experience and learn how some of the traditional dishes are prepared.

A drive through the countryside also reveals a landscape very different from the resorts of the coast: vineyards, olive trees, grazing sheep and goats, small monasteries, mountain plateaus and villages where everyday life continues much as it has for generations.

Explore Crete by Car or Bus Tours

Agia Pelagia’s location near Heraklion makes it a convenient starting point for exploring much of the island.

Head west towards Rethymno and Chania, two beautiful historic towns with some part of the towns offering Venetian architecture, atmospheric old streets and picturesque harbours. Continue further and you can discover some of western Crete’s extraordinary landscapes, including Balos Lagoon, Falassarna, Preveli beach, Elafonissi, Vai palm beach.

Travel east and the scenery changes again. Visit Agios Nikolaos, the resorts and beaches around Elounda, and the island of Spinalonga, reached by boat from Plaka, Elounda or Agios Nikolaos.

Drive south across the island and you will reach the shores of the South Cretan Sea, with places such as Matala, Agia Galini, Plakias, Lentas, Troustsouras, Frangokastelo, Sfakia, Sougia, Palaiochora, Rodakino, Agios Pavlos, Makry Gyalos and many smaller beaches and villages along the way.

Crete rewards anyone willing to explore. Its dramatic contrasts — beaches and mountains, fertile valleys and rocky gorges, busy towns and remote villages — mean that even a simple day’s drive can become part of the holiday. The island’s official tourism portal likewise highlights Crete’s combination of coastline, mountain landscapes, archaeology, gastronomy and outdoor activities.

Adventure & Outdoor Activities

If you prefer a more active holiday, there are plenty of possibilities across Crete:

Hiking and walking through gorges, coastal trails and mountain landscapes; jeep and 4×4 safaris through the Cretan countryside; e-bike and cycling tours; horse riding; sailing and boat excursions; diving and snorkelling; and a wide variety of water sports.

For serious walkers, Crete is famous for its gorges and mountain scenery. Samaria Gorge and Imbros Gorge are the best known, but these are only two of so many hiking areas across the island.

Archaeology, History & Culture

Few Mediterranean islands have a history as rich as Crete.

Beyond the Minoan palace of Knossos, you can visit the Minoan palace of Phaistos, the archaeological sites of Archanes, Gortyna, Malia and Zakros, the ancient city of Eleutherna, Venetian fortresses and monasteries, Byzantine churches and museums covering thousands of years of Cretan history. The official regional tourism site lists Knossos, Phaistos, Gortyna, Malia, Zakros, Spinalonga and other archaeological sites among Crete’s major cultural highlights.

But culture in Crete is not confined to museums. You will find it in village festivals, music, dance, food, hospitality and the traditions that remain an important part of everyday Cretan life.

Make Agia Pelagia Your Starting Point

You do not need to fill every day with sightseeing. Part of the pleasure of staying in Agia Pelagia is having the freedom to choose.

Spend a few days doing absolutely nothing beside the sea. In the next days, rent a car or book a tour and cross the island. Take a boat trip, go diving, explore Knossos, wander through Heraklion, visit mountain villages or simply follow a small road to see where it leads.

Crete is an island made for exploring — and Agia Pelagia is a very good place to begin.
