Weather & Climate in Crete – Temperatures, Seasons & Sea Conditions
Discover Crete’s year-round climate, with average air and sea temperatures, seasonal weather patterns, sunshine, humidity and the best months for swimming, sightseeing and outdoor activities.
Crete enjoys one of the warmest and sunniest climates in Europe, with long, dry summers, mild winters and pleasant temperatures through much of the year. Its Mediterranean climate makes the island an attractive destination not only during the traditional summer season, but also throughout spring and autumn.
From May to October, Crete generally experiences warm, settled weather with abundant sunshine and relatively little rainfall. July and August are the hottest months, particularly along the coast, where daytime temperatures commonly reach around 28–32°C, while hotter periods can bring considerably higher temperatures. The refreshing northern Meltemi winds often help make the summer heat more comfortable, especially in coastal areas.
Spring is particularly pleasant, with increasingly warm days, green landscapes and colourful wildflowers. By May, daytime temperatures are often ideal for sightseeing, walking and outdoor activities, while the sea gradually becomes warm enough for swimming.
September and October are also excellent months to visit Crete. The intense heat of midsummer begins to ease, yet the weather generally remains warm and sunny. The Mediterranean Sea retains the heat accumulated during summer, making early autumn one of the best periods for swimming and beach holidays.
Winter in Crete is comparatively mild, especially along the coast. December through February brings cooler temperatures and most of the island’s annual rainfall, although sunny days remain common. Snow is unusual at sea level but is a regular winter feature of Crete’s higher mountains.
Sea temperatures vary from approximately 15–17°C during winter to around 24–26°C in July, August and September. Because the sea warms and cools more slowly than the air, swimming conditions can remain very pleasant well into autumn. PS: note at the above charts – that the average sea temperature in November and December is by 1°C warmer! that May and April respectively…
Climate conditions do vary across the island. Southern Crete is generally warmer and drier, while mountainous areas are considerably cooler and receive more precipitation. This combination of sunshine, warm seas and a long mild season is one of the main reasons Crete can be enjoyed for much of the year.
